Art is life and life in itself is art

Sketchbook 10.May 02

Okay, here’s the latest update in my sketch book! Not much this time tho, because honestly I haven’t really done much lately. Hopefully I’ll have more for next time. And if you wonder why two of the images have a dull bluish color (Ceil Blue), that’s because it’s the background I draw against to minimize eyestrain, and because they are just sketches I haven’t taken the time to change the background color, because then I would have to “resharpen” the lineart to fit against the new background, which is more work than it sounds like actually.

As always, enjoy!

  1. A kind of creature concept I did. I decided to color it and it added a lot to the image as a whole I noticed. I used a brush that I had not before to add the “speckles” of darker color and illuminated glimmer, and it worked out really good I think. The illuminated glimmer was somewhat Na’vi inspired I have to admit.
I actually made up a whole story around this creature while I drew it, as you should really when drawing good concept art, it helps define the character better. This creature I decided to call the “Bone hunter”, quite unoriginal I know, and it’s a primitively intelligent creature that lives in a very dense jungle like forest. It feeds on bones and other calcium rich sources, and hunts thus pray only for it’s bones and leaves the flesh behind for other creatures to take. It’s body consists strongly of bones which have been enforced by a natural kind of compact carbon, making its body very rigid and extremely durable. But in times of calcium definitively (i.e starving) the bones easily become brittle and to avoid snapping of bones the body enforces the bones with extra carbon that the creature acquire thanks to a sudden desire to ingest carbon found in its surroundings. And it’s found it its surroundings in plants and such thanks to carbon rich soil due to large amounts brought down by meteors.
… and that’s the kind of things I think about while drawing haha.
  2. Did this night actually. Another hand study, this time going for a more complex pose and it turned out really good I think. I had some troubles with the thumb tho, always been a tricky part of the hand I think. Speed painting, if you exclude the thumb which on it own took as long as the rest of the picture to get right. I feel like I’m getting the hand of some things like shading and coloring better, I’m now just blindly “fumbling forward” with the pen, hoping each stroke is correct. But rather I now see or “know” how to do each part somewhat. But I have a long way to go still, but its improvements… baby steps of improvements, but still!
  3. A sketch for a body suite I did but could not quite finish, it just became to complex and it felt like I drew blindly so I let that piece be. I don’t want to get ahead of myself and ruin something because I simply can’t draw it. But from what I managed to draw I quite liked, it’s a kind of Neon Genesis Evangelion styled suite.
  4. This last one is mostly just a joke. I was drawing this creature looking thing and I just couldn’t get passed the head, so being frustrated, just as joke I tired to give it a number of comical expressions.
